Fjordlaks established in 1973
A success
story.
Anita and Anders Pedersen established Fjordlaks in 1973, focusing on smoked wild salmon and peeled shrimp.

History
Started with Smoked Salmon and Peeled shrimps.
The Pedersen family started with Smoked Salmon production in their basement for over 50 years ago. In 2025 all family members are still working in the company which has now grown to become one of the largest dried salted fish producers in the world.
In 1976 they decided to start their own fish production, and a fish farming facility for salmon and trout was operational in Storfjorden in Sunnmøre.
A desire to diversify led to the acquisition of a facility for producing salted and dried cod (Bacalhau) in Ålesund in 1985. The facility in Ålesund has developed to a 30,000 m² modern production plant. The main product is Bacalhau from Cod, Saithe and Ling. In the summer of 2016, the farming and production of trout were sold to new owners.
Fjordlaks is now a global market leader in production of dried salted fish, holding approximately 50% of the market share in Portugal and Santo Domingo. Fjordlaks also have significant market presence in Brazil, Africa, and Jamaica. The company is also a major producer og By-Products and fish oil for the food industry.
Fjordlaks has two subsidiaries. Tufjordbruket AS is located in Tufjord, Måsøy Municipality in West Finnmark and Karlsøybruket AS located in Karlsøy Municipality, northwest of Tromsø. Both are major byer of fresh fish delivered directly from the fishing boats.
The administration and production facilities are situated in Ålesund on Norway’s west coast. Ålesund developed as a city during the 19th century due to extensive fish trade, a tradition that continues to this day. Ålesund is now Norways largest export harbour for fish.
Today, Ålesund is a vibrant city with a wide range of industries within aquaculture, fisheries, and other maritime businesses. The city gained its distinctive Art Nouveau architecture from the reconstruction after the great fire of 1904.
